World settingsWorld modifiers
5 sliders · 7 presets · 7 togglesEvery world modifier is a set of global keys, and these are the exact values each option sets, read from the game files. The biggest swing is on combat: Very Hard means creatures take 70% damage; you take 200% damage from creatures; creatures are 120% size and speed outdoors; stars are 1.4x as likely. On Normal you lose 5% of every skill when you die. The settings live on the world, not the character, so a character carried into another world plays by that world's rules, and they can be changed later on an existing world from the world list. A dedicated server takes them as launch arguments: -preset hardcore, -modifier raids muchmore with the value shown beside each option below, or -setkey nomap for a single toggle.

Governs how often enemies may raid your base.
Changes how portals work in the game.
A preset only sets sliders and toggles, so anything it does not mention stays at the default. Hard and Hardcore also speed raids up, and Casual and Hammer switch them off.

The damage rates stack with the game's own group scaling: each extra player within 100 metres, up to five, makes creatures hit a little harder and take less damage, so a Very Hard world played in a group is harder again. Size and speed only change outdoors: dungeon interiors keep their normal creatures. The resource rate multiplies creature drop amounts, chest and destructible loot (extra loot rolls, with the fraction as a partial last roll), berries and mushrooms, beehives and sap collectors, and never pushes a single drop past a full stack. Death penalty skill loss is a share of each skill's current level, so a level 80 skill loses 4 levels on Normal.
