Privacy policy

Every page load is counted in Google Analytics, which sets cookies and receives your IP address, the page you are on, the site that sent you and your browser and device type. It is used to see which pages are worth writing and which are broken. You can block it with the Google Analytics opt-out add-on, or read Google's privacy policy.

The web server keeps ordinary access logs, which include IP addresses and user agents. They exist to find errors and to block abuse.

The map generates worlds in your browser. The seed you type is sent to our server as well, so that the locations for that seed can be generated once and cached for the next person who looks at it. A seed is a short string a game gives out, not information about you, and it is stored on its own with no account, IP address or session attached to it. Cached seed results are kept indefinitely, because the same seed always produces the same world.

Markers you cross off are kept in your browser. They only reach the server if you are signed in and save the world to your account.

Signing in is optional. Everything except comments and saved worlds works without an account. You can sign in with Google or with a one-time link sent to your email address.

When you sign in we store:

• Your email address, and whether the provider has verified it
• Your display name and avatar image URL, when Google supplies them
• The Google account identifier, so the same person gets the same account next time
• A session record holding your IP address and browser user agent, so a session can be ended if it is abused

We never receive your Google password. Sign-in links are sent through Resend, which handles the email delivery and sees the address the link goes to. A request for a sign-in link also records the requesting IP address, to stop the form being used to send mail to people who did not ask for it.

A session cookie keeps you signed in. It is the only cookie the site itself sets, apart from a short-lived one during the Google sign-in hop.

Comments are stored with the page they were left on, their text and the account that wrote them, and they are public. Reports on a comment record who reported it and why, and moderator actions are logged, so that both can be reviewed. Saved worlds store the seed and the markers you crossed off against your account.

The advertising on this site is sold and served by NitroPay, which fills each slot through a number of advertising exchanges. NitroPay and those exchanges may set cookies or read device identifiers in order to choose an advertisement, limit how often you see the same one, and measure whether it was viewed. What they use for that includes your IP address and the rough location it implies, your browser and device, the pages you look at here, and identifiers set on earlier visits to this site or to others.

Advertising partners are not given your email address, your account, or anything else that names you. NitroPay describes its own handling in the NitroPay privacy policy.

You can limit personalised advertising through any of these:

• Google Ads Settings, for advertising served by Google
• YourAdChoices, the Digital Advertising Alliance opt-out
• Network Advertising Initiative opt-out
• Your Online Choices, for visitors in Europe

These are stored per browser, so clearing cookies or moving to another browser means setting them again. Opting out does not remove the advertising, it makes it less relevant to you.

If you live in California, the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act, gives you the right to know what personal information we hold about you, to have it deleted, to have it corrected, to opt out of its sale or sharing, and to exercise any of those rights without being charged a different price or given a worse service.

In the last twelve months the site has collected:

• Identifiers: IP address, cookie and device identifiers, and for account holders an email address, display name and Google account identifier
• Internet activity: pages viewed, the site that referred you, and browser and device details
• Inferences: interest categories our advertising partners derive from that activity

All of it comes from you or from your device as you browse. Identifiers and internet activity are disclosed to the analytics and advertising partners named above, for the purposes described there.

We do not sell personal information for money. Passing information to advertising partners so they can serve interest-based advertising counts as a sale or share under California law, so the opt-out is provided: use the Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information link in the footer of any page. It is shown to visitors in California and records the choice for the browser you are using. We do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of anyone under 16.

To ask what we hold, or to have it deleted or corrected, email [email protected] from the address on your account. We will respond within 45 days.

You are asked for consent before any advertising or analytics cookie is set. The prompt is run by NitroPay through a consent management platform built on the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework, and it names the advertising vendors and what each one does. You can change or withdraw consent at any time through the consent link in the footer. Withdrawing it does not affect processing that already happened.

Where a legal basis is required, ours are consent for advertising and analytics cookies, performance of a contract for the account features you ask us to provide, and legitimate interest in keeping the site working and free of abuse. You may also complain to your national data protection authority.

Account data is kept while the account exists. Sessions expire on their own, and sign-in links last twenty minutes and work once. Server logs are rotated by the host. Email [email protected] to have your account and its comments and saved worlds removed.

The site is not aimed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect anything from them. If you believe a child has given us personal information, write and it will be deleted.
