Copper. It deals 12 slash and 12 pierce, blocks for 2, and trains Knives. The primary attack is a three-hit chain at 6 stamina a swing; the secondary is a forward leap for triple damage at 18. Backstabs deal 6 times damage. Upgrading costs 4 copper and 8 
Greydwarf Eye for the first level, doubling at each of the next two, the eyes being something the base recipe never asks for, and quality 4 brings it to 15 of each damage type at 200 durability.
Past quality 4, the Forge of Potential will take it one level further for 1 Bronze Battle Idol plus 18 Copper and 36 Greydwarf Eye. No other station asks for the idol.

Each quality level adds 2 damage and 50 durability. Quality 2 costs the per-level amount, quality 3 twice that and quality 4 four times, so the last level is more than half of the total.
