Rest and regenerationComfort and the rested buff
22 comfort · 29 minutes rested · 11 groups · 10 m radiusRested is +50% health regeneration, 2x stamina and 2x eitr regeneration and +50% experience on every skill, and comfort decides how long it lasts: 8 minutes at comfort 1, plus 1 minute for every level above that. The highest comfort you can reach in 1.0 is 22, which buys 29 minutes every time you get up from the fire, or 24 and 31 minutes with the Midsummer and Yule pieces both standing. Reaching it takes one piece from each of 11 groups inside a 10 metre radius, under a roof.
1.0 rewrote this. Five groups were added, twenty-five pieces gained comfort, and four rugs and the lava lantern went from 1 to 2. None of the code changed, so every older guide you find still quotes a ceiling of 17 from a build that no longer exists.
The most comfort you can build with what each biome gives you, counting the station a piece needs as well as its materials, so the hearth sits in the Swamp because the stonecutter takes iron. Each line lists only what moves the number. Pieces that arrive in a biome without beating what the group already has are listed after it.

You start at 1. Standing under a roof adds another, so an empty shack is already comfort 2. After that the game collects every comfort piece within 10 metres, sorts them by group, and adds the best one from each group. A second chair adds nothing. Neither does a better chair, because it replaces the one you had rather than stacking with it.
Two details catch people out. A fire contributes nothing while it is unlit, because an inactive piece reports zero comfort rather than its printed value. And the buff only ever extends: walk out of a comfort 22 hall into a comfort 2 hut and the timer you already have keeps running at its old length.
Building one piece from each row is the whole optimization. Rows marked new arrived with 1.0, and the pieces in them used to stack freely before they were grouped, which is the single biggest change to how a base scores.

Rested runs for 8 minutes at comfort 1 and gains 60 seconds per comfort level above that. It costs nothing and it follows you out the door, which makes it the best value in the game for the effort.
Sitting there is stronger than the buff it produces. Resting multiplies health regeneration by 3, stamina by 4 and eitr by 4 while you stay put, and converts to rested after 20 seconds. If you are topping off before a fight, stay on the bench rather than leaving the moment the icon appears.
Three sets of build pieces only exist on certain real-world dates, checked against your computer's clock rather than anything in the world. The Yule Tree and the Maypole carry comfort and belong to no group, which means they stack on top of a finished base instead of replacing anything, and each moves the ceiling by one. A piece stays standing after its window closes, so a Maypole raised in June still counts at Yule and the two together reach 24. The rest land in groups that are already capped, so they add nothing but the look.
What each level is worth, so you can stop building when the next piece stops paying for itself.
