Creature levels

Star creatures

10% a star · x2 health at one star · x4 drops at two

A one-star creature has 2x health and hits for 1.5x damage; two stars mean 3x health and 2x damage. Drops marked to scale double per star, in both amount and chance. Each star is a separate 10% roll made after the one before it succeeds, so on a normal world about 9% of creatures that can level spawn with one star and 1% with two. Some 1.0 alternative biome patches double or triple those odds.

The share assumes a creature that can reach two stars and the default 10% roll. Each creature's own page lists its star health and which of its drops scale.

What raises the odds

The 10% is multiplied by the world's combat setting and by every alternative biome patch that covers the spot, so a Very Hard world in a Fortress Mountain patch rolls far more stars than the base game. Raised odds compound per star, which is why two-star creatures turn from rare to routine.

Stars that wait for distance

A few spawns never level up near the centre of the world, which keeps the starting area gentle. Past the distance below they roll stars like anything else.

Boarstars only beyond 800 m from the centre
Greydwarf Brutestars only beyond 2,000 m from the centre
Neckstars only beyond 800 m from the centre
Trollstars only beyond 2,000 m from the centre
Nests, dungeons and fish

Creatures from nests and spawners use the spawner's own level-up chance rather than the 10%, still multiplied by the world setting and the alternative biome, and creatures placed in dungeons and camps use the location's own level settings. Fish roll the same way up to five levels at 15 to 20% each, and a caught fish keeps its level as item quality. Bosses never get stars.
