The Cultivator and what grows whereFarming: crops, spacing and biome rules
Starts in the Black Forest · about two in-game days to a harvestFarming starts in the Black Forest, because the Cultivator takes bronze and core wood to forge. It tills soil, plants seeds and trees, and regrows grass over old dig sites. Till a patch, plant, wait roughly two in-game days, harvest, and always replant from the yield: every crop returns more than you put in the ground.
A planted crop shows its status when you hover it, and 1.0 brought the number of ways to fail up to five. "Can't grow in this environment" means the wrong biome, so check the table below. "Needs more room" means another plant, rock or structure sits inside its spacing radius, so leave about half a meter around each root vegetable and more for mushrooms. "Needs an open sky" means a roof, even one 20 meters up, is blocking it: farms stay outdoors, fences are fine. The two new ones are heat and cold. Nothing edible tolerates cold, so no crop at all will grow in the Deep North or on a mountain, and only the fir saplings survive up there. In the Ashlands the opposite applies: carrots, onions, turnips, kale, oats and poteitr are all flagged for the biome but cook without a shield generator over the plot. Healthy means growing, and nothing can speed it up.

Barley and flax are the Plains' real treasure: barley becomes flour at the windmill and flax becomes linen thread, and neither grows anywhere else. Oat seeds go through that same windmill, first into oats and then into oat flour. Trees plant with the cultivator too; beech, fir, pine, birch, oak and timberwood seeds drop from their trees, and a beech plantation next to the base ends wood runs forever.
Carrots feed the Black Forest era, turnips carry the Swamp stews, onions power the Mountain plates, and barley bakes into bread and lox pie for the Plains and beyond. Honey runs on its own schedule: beehives from beech seeds and queen bees, one hive per wall.
