Trees and wood

10 trees · 15 core wood from a pine

Core wood comes from pine trees in the Black Forest: a felled pine splits into two half logs that drop about 15 core wood and as much plain wood between them, and any axe will do. Finewood needs a bronze axe, because birch and oak ignore anything weaker; ancient bark comes from swamp trees, also bronze; Yggdrasil wood needs black metal. A tree too tough for your axe takes no damage at all, so if chopping does nothing, that is the reason.

Trunk yields are averages for one tree on the default resource rate: each half log rolls its table a fixed number of times, so the split between wood types varies from tree to tree but the total does not. A higher resource rate in the world settings multiplies all of it.

Felling faster

A falling trunk damages whatever it lands on, including other trees, so felling into a stand clears several at once. The trunk and its half logs take chop damage like the tree did, and the halves are where nearly all the wood is, so a trunk is never worth leaving. Tool tier only gates whether a hit counts; above that, damage per swing comes from the axe's chop value and the Woodcutting skill.
