Dark volcanic glass.
Obsidian is a material mined from black glass deposits on the higher slopes of the Mountain, and the deposits need an 
Iron Pickaxe or better to break. They shatter when struck and the shards roll downhill, so mining from below the deposit loses fewer of them. Chests in frost caves and abandoned log cabins also hold some. It weighs 2, stacks to 50 and, unlike ore and metal bars, passes through portals. Finding any at all unlocks the workbench tool shelf, 
Obsidian Arrows and 
Frost Arrows.
