Ancient Bark and 2 
Deer Hide. They give 8 armour and 800 durability, gaining 2 armour per upgrade level to reach 14 at quality 4. Each level costs another 2 root and 5 ancient bark. Wearing them costs 2% movement speed.
Past quality 4, the Forge of Potential will take it one level further for 1 Iron Protection Idol plus 9 Root and 22 Ancient Bark. No other station asks for the idol.

Each quality level adds 2 armor and 100 durability. Quality 2 costs the per-level amount, quality 3 twice that and quality 4 four times, so the last level is more than half of the total.
