Linen Thread. They give 18 armour and 1000 durability, gaining 2 armour per upgrade level to reach 24 at quality 4. Each level costs another 5 bear hides, 1 ribcage and 1 linen thread. They weigh 5 and carry no movement penalty.
Past quality 4, the Forge of Potential will take it one level further for 1 Black Metal Protection Idol plus 22 Bear Hide, 4 Vile Ribcage and 4 Linen Thread. No other station asks for the idol.

Each quality level adds 2 armor and 200 durability. Quality 2 costs the per-level amount, quality 3 twice that and quality 4 four times, so the last level is more than half of the total.
